Bobbing Rock Peacock

Description

I'm sure every artist has this.

A certain style... a design... an idea... a concept... that you tell yourself you're never going to waste time creating. Either because it's over-used, or you find it unappealing, or boring, or whatever...

Well... bobbing rock birds were one of mine "I'm never gonna waste time on those" items.

This is largely due to the fact that most of the ones I've seen are kinda ugly. And boring. And their fairly common. I've seen quite a few of them. Some of my relatives have them. And I just had no interest in ever putting one together.

Well... funny how things change...

Due to an approaching art festival that I am attending, I've been forced to side-line commissions and extra work because I have to have that time to prepare. But occasionally someone will request something that I can either easily assemble, or could potentially be a design worth continuing. Which is how I ended up making this peacock.

I was approached by a guy who works for the company I rent space from. He had a picture of another peacock rock bobber his relatives had and he said "I really want one of these, can you make it?"

I wasn't terribly interested in doing that... but he left the pics with me and was like, "It's some extra money and I like your work."

I did think about it... and decided to give it a shot. I'd never made any sort of bobbing, swinging rock things before, but it didn't seem that hard.

Plus... the peacock his relatives had was kinda fugly... like... the kinda plain, boring fugly that makes you want to recreate it because you know you can do it better justice.

So yea! I cruised up one of the nearby canyons and rounded up a few rocks to experiment with and set to work.

This posed an interesting challenge for me. Because the peacock needs to be able to rest in a neutral position all on its own, while also being able to freely rock without tipping over in either direction. And it needed to do this with a very simple design. All the birds I'd ever seen achieved this by simply resting on a fulcrum with a couple of L-hooks.

It took some experimenting before I got it right.

But I am actually very pleased with how this turned out. I like sculptures that move, and this one definitely moves, and looks really attractive too.

And with a tail-span of about 2ft, it's an impressive sculpture to have in your yard or inside.
