You know, I always wonder why no one ever creates fantasy style scythes... I mean, you can find swords and daggers and axes out to wazoo... but scythes? Pfft! 'bout the only place you're likely to find a fantasy themed scythe is in an anime picture, or fantasy, or horror... But almost never as an actual steel weapon!

So... VOILA!!!

This last semester, I decided that I wanted to try something different... and more specifically, I wanted to make something with a blade. But, having decided on that... I did NOT want to make the same ol' boring stuff that everyone else does... Everyone always makes things like swords, or knives, or daggers, and occasionally axes... but you almost never run across scythes! Especially not big elaborate ones! So that's what I decided to do. ^__^

(Note: For some reason, I have a fondness of scythes... don't ask me why... =P )

Now, I know what ppl are gonna say... and no, this is not completed. I ran out of time in the semester before I could finish it. >_> So the blades aren't fully completed... nothing is really cleaned up... I haven't added any of the texturing, coloring and decorations... and the blades aren't even attached to the staff, which is why it's laid out on the floor. =P

But this is more or less how it looks, though significantly 'rougher' then it will be once I'm done.

This was really fun to make... but it took me so damn long to get this far! >_< Like... the whole semester, including pulling overtime almost every day, and I still didn't finish. *grumbles* Not sure when I'll be able to though... seeing as I kinda don't have the equipment myself, or the money to retake the class... ^_^;

Details:

Main Scythe blade (long one): Around 2ft 6in in length, and weighs in at 11lbs. Made from 1/4in steel, with a 14 gauge sheet metal overlay for decoration. Blade edge situated along the underside of the blade (like a normal scythe)

Rear Scythe blade (big wide one): Around the same length of the Main blade from the tip of one curved blade to the other. Also made from 1/4in steel with a 14 gauge sheet metal overlay for decoration. Weighs in at 16lbs. Blade edges run along the outter curve of the main blades, as well as on the center spike along the bottom.

Staff: Made from 1in diameter, solid steel rod. Stands roughly 6ft 2in - 6ft 6in NOT including the blades. The center piece is made from 2 identical pieces 1/4in thick, which were welded on the outside of the staff pieces, then reinforced to prevent twisting of the metal. Weighs about 40lbs.

The spikes on the front of the staff are also 1/4in steel... not sharpened, as is the decorative piece at the base of the staff.

And for anyone wondering... that big red ball is a solid, polished chunk of reddish marble, about the size of a softball. I added it to help counter balance the big-ass blades on the other end.

Now... in case you weren't adding it up... with everything I CURRENTLY HAVE, this project weighs about 57lbs (give or take), and is very awkward to try and carry around... good think I'm in good shape. lol

I'd write more... but right now I'm about to keel over. lol

One last thing... to any of you who don't know the difference between a scythe and a sickle... go look it up. There IS a difference! And this is NOT a sickle... I had to spend 4 months listening to ppl tell me that it was a sickle and not a scythe... which tells me that they're don't really know much about the midieval farming equipment. lol =P

Well... actually... most of the semester I just got blank looks when I told them what it was. I ended up just saying "A scythe... Ya know, the big bladed weapon the Grim Reaper always carries around." And usually then I'd get some spark of recognition... cuz just about everyone knows the Grim Reaper. Of course, this was always where the issue of scythe vs. sickle came in... lol =P

Anyway... am falling asleep... and my wrist is F-ing killing me. >__< I'll probably move this to Scraps later, since it's a WIP. But since no one ever looks at scraps... I'm throwing it up as a deviation first, so at least that way ppl will actually be able to see it! lol =P

Note: I'm not a photographer... and I'm not a layout guru. so the pictures suck and are uber ugly... but it's the best I could do. =P

Note again: Pics taken in my bro's room... cuz I don't have nearly enough floor space available for me to keep this in my room. lol

You can NEVER have too many scythes!
Man, I miss my old one, now. A lazy farmhand ran off with it... *sniff*
But it's gorgeous!
And yeah, I used to get a lot of the "sickle vs. scythe" thing. But then again, I had both a sickle AND a scythe, and I was able to show the difference.
Although there wasn't much medieval about ours. I used them to get what hay the tractor couldn't get, and I got pretty good with swinging that thing around. Poachers, BEWARE!

Hehe, thanks! :)

I do plan to finish it... I just don't know when! I suppose when I have access to the proper equipment again... And then I'm gonna have to make a stand for it, otherwise it'll have nowhere to go. =P

:o These are amazing
Would you consider commissions at all? xD Even if it is just for the blade part or something?
:iconangi-kat:
Wish I could... but I cant. :(

I don't have any equipment of my own, and I didn't have the money to take another semester at school. and my boss won't let me waste time working on personal stuff at the shop.

Sorry... maybe at a later date, when I have the money to take the class again at school. lol =P

I have a thing for Scythes, too. And you're RIGHT! Scythes are underappreciated, and most characters who wield them are pretty cool. I realized I liked them when I was playing Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories. Marluxia, the end boss, has a pink one lol.

But not until playing .hack//GU did I really start to love them, there's a job class called Flick Reapers, who use nothing but Scythes, and the main character Haseo, when in his third form, has a a really wicked scythe. Once I unlocked it, I used that againstm ost of the subsequent enemies in the game!

It actually has tiny saw tines that run along the edge of the blade like a chainsaw!

[link] Here's a link to a good picture of it.

Anyway! I really like yours, I hope you can finish it someday!
