Sock Eater Monster - Colored

Description

Last year I crafted a large sculpture of a sock eating monster. It wasn't colored, and it held an assortment of actual, cloth socks. At the time, I was pleased with the design... and yet, not.

A year later and much deliberation... I realized that one of the things I was displeased with, was how much texture there was. It wasn't a bad texture. But there was so much of it that the details kinda disappeared. So I wanted to bring out those individual textures. So you can visually see the distinctive parts, rather then your eye skimming over a mass of 'stuff'.

And so, I picked out my colors, and I sat down to paint. I specifically wanted to keep the metal looking like metal, rather then covering it all up. I also wanted to keep the colors softer, so they meshed naturally with the silvers and browns of the metal.

I used a rust patina to color the 'furry bits' on the 'Eaters body. The body itself is gold and purple, colored in alternating segments (purple-gold-purple-gold). The armor-like plates on the legs, arms and tail were colored a bright, metallic green, to make them distinctively different in color from everything else. And of course, there's no red anywhere else, so that the red eyes will stand out more distinctively.

The other thing I didn't like was the socks. Normal cotton socks don't quite mesh well with an all-steel sculpture. Normal socks can also get dirty, and wear out. And so I decided the real socks had to go, and I built metal socks in their place, and colored each one differently. As this is a sock eating monster, I wanted to have a whole range of different socks. You're normal, high-ribbed sock. Ankle sock. A fuzzy, warm sock with rubber grip pads on the bottom, like you get in winter. A little girls frilly pink sock. And colorful toe socks.

I am significantly happier with this new colored design. Now I just need to find someone to take him home!
