Description

This is a sculpture for my parents. They've been pestering me for another Ent for about a year now. I had planned to have it done for them by Christmas, but I ran out of time! So it's a few weeks late now...

Apparently there was a misunderstanding on size... I was thinking something about the size of their mail box. They were thinking something significantly smaller....

Whelp. They've got a big one now!  XD

Tried some new things with this one. Different texturing for the bark. Fluffier beard. A more solid inner frame, so it doesn't whobble. Since I intended this to sit on the ground, I ran a straight rod along the underside of the feet, with loops on each end to drive a stake. I even made a pair of stakes, which can be stored on the Ents back when not in use (I welded a couple loops on the back).

Since the original idea was that this guy would be guarding the garden, I gave him some proper tools for the job! Had this flat, shovel-like tool I turned into a staff, and the wiry implement in his other hand is an old leaf rake.

The eyes were an interesting experiment. I went with a pair of clear, slightly opalescent marbles. They looked really cool when the light reflected thru them, so they'd shine from the face. And then I went and kinda screwed that up by making the top of the head too leafy and blocking the suns access.... I may take it back to my shop and make some modifications to try and fix that, cuz they just don't have the same impact being all dark. Although once this guy rusts, they might stand out more.

Hmmmm....

Things to consider. Every time I build something I find some technique or design or idea that didn't work out how I was thinking it would. Which means there's always SOMETHING I'm quietly unhappy about with my work. But, that in turn drives me to fix the issue next time, and almost invariably the work looks better and better.

Oh! Almost forgot.... for those of you wondering, this guy is about 4-1/2ft tall. His top branches come up to my chest. So he's a fairly hefty little guy.

Angi, hon, I watch your talent grow with utmost joy. I cannot express in typed words how proud I am of your accomplishments. I sincerely believe Shayne would have bugged you to death for one of these ents or perhaps a couple of bears. Keep up the amazing work and know how much I love you and miss you.
