Description

A commission request from my sister. She wanted to get her hubby something special for this b-day this year, so she requested this handsome fellow!

Had quite a lot of fun working on this. Lotsa fun with textures!! :D And I discovered the joy of trying to apply thick, heavy lacquer to a broad, flat surface (it doesn't like staying smooth and even for more then 20sec)

The texture I got by turning the gas off on my MIG machine, while leaving the wire speed and amperage the same.

If anyone has ever wondered WHY you need to have shielding gas for welding... just look at this guys bark... not how you want your structural welds to look. lol

The texturing darkened my metal up a lot on its own, but, I added a bit of copper plate patina to give it a bit of brown coloring, then I dusted the leaves, beard, and eye brows with green paint so they looked like leaves. I put a light coat of clear matte finish on the body, then dusted the leaves with a clear coat gloss. That way the bark would be properly dull, while the leaves would have a bit of shine to make them stand out.

The eyes are made from a pair of porcelain beads I found at the craft store. They have a mottled green and brown glaze on them, but where the holes are, I noticed that the brown glaze is visible in a ring around the hole, making for a really nice green-brown eyeball. :D So thats what I did

The final product:

10in x 6in wooden base with clear lacquer (bought this at a craft store)

Sculpture is around 13-14in tall x 13in wide

Made from 18 gauge steel, rebar, and round stock.

Has 4 hooks to hang things off of, and the hands are shaped to hold an iPhone, though a blackberry or google phone or regular phone will fit as well. Mp3 players can also be put in the hands.

Base has just enough room to set an average wallet down on, though you can put an assortment of other things.

And I am quite happy with the fact that even with nothing on it, the sculpture STILL looks good! :D It doesn't look like an empty stand... it looks like a tree man walking.
