A tribute to Maggie

Description

This is an urn I crafted for a Black Lab named Maggie.

On things like these... I always felt that if you're going the extra mile to custom request an urn of your pet, it shouldn't be an obvious-looking box. When you look at it, your first reaction should be that it's a statue, not a box. And so I created this design so that the fur of the body overlaps in ways that disguise the edges of the lid. A small screw on the side of the body, along with a hook in the chest, keeps the lid in place.

The design for this sculpture was based off of actual photo's of the dogs face, so I could try and get features as close to the real thing as my skills allowed.

It's always interesting to me how I can use the same patterns to make multiple sculptures... and yet somehow the same pattern pieces don't fit together the same way as they did the first time. Many times I sit here, scratching my head and asking myself "HOW did I even get these to fit together originally?? Because they certainly don't want to do so now!" In many ways, this turns out to be a good thing, as I have to change my design and it often becomes something just as awesome or better then the original.

With this urn, I tries to better define the shape of the box. Metal warps a lot when you weld on it, and so building boxes that are suppose to maintain their ridged shape are an incredible pain in the ass to do. I am quite happy with how the lid part turned out. It fit better. Had a better shape. Better rim. The body box continued to defy my attempts to stay in the shape I originally bent it into. But the end result was cleaner, and the screw used to hold it closed was more discrete.

My attempts to disguise the box as being a box weren't quite as successful. Since this is a lab, and labs have short smooth fur, it limited how much fur paneling I could use. The new changes to the lid also made certain fur panels not fit the way they're suppose to. I think overall I was successful. But it's something I'll have to play with more on future designs.

Roughly 10" tall x 5" wide x 8" long
